Understanding Organic Spray Tanning
Beautiful color without
UV exposure.

A professional spray tan does not actually tan your skin the way the sun does. Instead, it temporarily creates the appearance of naturally bronzed skin without exposing your skin to ultraviolet radiation.

Rather than stimulating melanin production, professional spray tanning works on the outermost layer of dead skin cells, producing cosmetic color that gradually fades as your skin naturally renews itself.

At Naturally Bronzed, we carefully selected professional organic tanning solutions formulated with naturally derived plant-based DHA, aloe vera, and skin-conditioning ingredients. While no professional spray tanning solution is 100% organic, we chose premium formulations that align with our standards for performance, comfort, and natural-looking results.

Our solutions are selected for
  • Naturally derived plant-based DHA.
  • Aloe-based professional formulations.
  • Organic and cruelty-free standards.
  • Paraben-free, gluten-free, and mineral oil free ingredients.
  • Natural-looking color and more even fading.
  • A comfortable client experience from application to first rinse.
Naturally Derived DHA
What is DHA?

DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is the active tanning ingredient used in professional spray tanning. The DHA in our professional formulations is naturally derived from plant sources such as sugar beet or sugar cane.

When applied to the skin, DHA reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of dead skin cells through a surface-level cosmetic process commonly known as the Maillard reaction. Over the next several hours, this reaction develops into the bronze color you see after your appointment.

Because this reaction happens only on the surface layer of the skin, your spray tan naturally fades as your skin renews itself. This is why preparation and aftercare have such a strong effect on how even your tan looks and how long it lasts.

Did you know?

A spray tan provides cosmetic color only. It does not increase melanin production and does not protect against UV exposure, so sunscreen should still be used whenever you are outdoors.

Cosmetic bronzer vs. developed color

Some solutions include a cosmetic bronzer that gives immediate guide color. This temporary color rinses away during your first shower. Your true spray tan develops from naturally derived DHA over the next several hours.

Evidence Snapshot
What current understanding
supports.
Surface-Level Color

DHA creates temporary cosmetic color through a reaction with amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin. It does not stimulate melanin production.

UV-Free Application

A spray tan can create a bronzed appearance without intentionally exposing the skin to ultraviolet radiation.

No Sun Protection

Developed spray-tan color is not sunscreen and does not prevent sunburn. Broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing remain important outdoors.

Realistic expectations

Results vary with skin condition, preparation, chosen solution, rinse timing, hydration, friction, and aftercare. Professional guidance improves consistency, but no spray tan can guarantee an identical result for every person.

Before Your Tan

Prep right.
Glow longer.

01
Exfoliate
Thoroughly remove dead skin cells at least 24 hours before your session. Use an oil-free, pH-balanced exfoliant and avoid moisturizers the day of your appointment.
02
Shave or Wax Early
Hair removal at least 24 hours before your session. Shaving after development can exfoliate the skin and may shorten the life of your color.
03
Arrive Product-Free
No moisturizers, oils, deodorant, or perfumes on the day of your session. These create a barrier that blocks even development.
04
Wear Loose, Dark Clothing
Tight clothing can rub and streak a developing tan. Go loose, go dark — your glow will thank you.
After Your Tan

Protect it.
Extend it.

01
Wait to Rinse
Classic: wait the full 8 hours. Rapid: 2hr = light · 3hr = medium · 4hr = deepest. Avoid all water, sweat, and friction during development.
02
Use Shower Glow
Our DHA-infused body wash cleanses safely without stripping color. Lemon verbena scented. Designed to cleanse gently and support longer-lasting color.
03
Moisturize Daily
Skin Glow tan extender with Vitamins A & E. Goes on completely clear. Locks in moisture, extends color, and fades evenly. Try both with our Shower & Skin Glow Sample Pack — available in-studio.
04
Avoid Exfoliating
Skip scrubs and exfoliating products until your tan has fully faded. Long hot baths and chlorine pools will also accelerate fading.
The Naturally Bronzed Perspective
The best result should look
like it belongs to you.

We do not believe the best spray tan is automatically the darkest spray tan. We believe the best result complements your natural coloring, fits the occasion, and develops on a timeline you can realistically follow.

That is why we educate before recommending. We explain the difference between cosmetic bronzer and developed color, help you choose between Classic and Rapid timing, and give you practical preparation and aftercare instructions before asking you to commit.

Natural-looking color, thoughtful guidance, and realistic expectations. That is the standard behind every Naturally Bronzed Wellness Experience™.

Who It Is For
Professional spray tanning is ideal for
real life moments.
Brides & Events

A natural-looking glow for weddings, bridal parties, proms, graduations, galas, reunions, and photos.

Vacations

Start your trip with beautiful cosmetic color instead of trying to build a tan in the sun.

Fitness & Photos

Spray tanning is popular for fitness competitions, stage lighting, photography, and professional appearances.

Natural results are the goal.

The best spray tan should complement your natural skin tone rather than overpower it. We help you choose a solution and development time that fits your goals.

UV-Free Color
Professional spray tan vs.
traditional UV tanning.
Professional Spray TanTraditional UV Tanning
Creates immediate cosmetic color without UV exposure.Requires ultraviolet exposure to stimulate melanin.
Customizable shade and development time.Less control over final color.
Consistent application in a private automated booth. Results vary based on sun exposure, skin type, and timing.
Does not provide sun protection; sunscreen is still needed.Involves UV exposure and still requires sun protection.
Preparation
A little preparation
goes a long way.

The quality of your spray tan begins before you enter the booth. Good preparation creates a smoother surface for the solution and helps the naturally derived DHA develop more evenly.

  • Exfoliate gently 24–48 hours before your appointment, especially elbows, knees, ankles, and feet.
  • Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your session when possible.
  • Arrive with clean skin free of lotions, oils, makeup, deodorant, perfume, and body sprays.
  • Wear loose, dark clothing and sandals after your appointment.
  • Remove jewelry before entering the booth.
Professional tip

Hydrated skin usually produces the most even-looking results. If your skin is dry, moisturize daily in the days leading up to your appointment, then skip moisturizer on the day of your spray tan.

Avoid oil-based exfoliants before your appointment because they can leave residue that interferes with even color development.

Aftercare
Protect your glow and help it
fade evenly.

Your spray tan does not end when you leave the studio. Because DHA develops color within the outermost layer of dead skin cells, maintaining hydrated skin helps preserve a smoother, more even-looking result.

  • Follow your assigned rinse time exactly.
  • Use warm water only during your first rinse when possible.
  • Skip scrubbing, washcloths, loofahs, and exfoliating products.
  • Gently pat skin dry instead of rubbing.
  • Moisturize daily after your first rinse.
What can shorten your tan?
  • Long hot showers or baths.
  • Chlorinated pools and salt water.
  • Frequent shaving.
  • Harsh soaps, scrubs, or exfoliating acids.
  • Dry skin and heavy friction from tight clothing.

Wellness Questions
Your spray tan questions,
answered.

We believe informed clients make confident decisions. That is why we explain not only what we recommend, but why we recommend it. Below are clear, practical answers to the questions clients ask most about professional organic spray tanning.

Before Your Appointment
How should I prepare for my spray tan?

Exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment, shave or wax at least 24 hours beforehand when possible, and arrive with clean, product-free skin. Avoid lotions, oils, deodorant, makeup, and perfume on the day of your appointment because these can create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution.

Should I shave before my spray tan?

Yes. If you normally shave, do it at least 24 hours before your appointment when possible. This gives the skin time to settle and helps reduce the chance of uneven development around freshly opened follicles.

Can I wax before my appointment?

Yes. Waxing should be completed at least 24 hours before your spray tan so the skin has time to calm before the solution is applied.

Should I moisturize before my appointment?

Moisturizing in the days leading up to your appointment is helpful, especially if your skin is dry. On the day of your spray tan, skip moisturizer unless we specifically recommend otherwise, because product residue may affect even color development.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear loose, dark clothing and sandals whenever possible. Tight clothing, leggings, socks, bras, and fitted shoes can create friction while the tan is still developing.

Should I remove jewelry before my spray tan?

Yes. Remove watches, rings, necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry before entering the booth to help avoid tan lines and allow more even coverage.

During Your Appointment
How long does a spray tan appointment take?

Most appointments take about 10–15 minutes from start to finish. The actual spray process inside the booth only takes a few minutes.

Is the spray tan booth private?

Yes. Your session takes place in a private automated booth, so you can feel comfortable throughout the process.

Can I spray tan nude?

Yes. Many clients choose to tan nude to minimize tan lines. Because the booth is private, what you wear during the session is based on your personal comfort level.

What do you provide for the session?

We provide barrier cream, sticky feet, a disposable hair net, and optional disposable undergarments. We will also explain how to use each item before your session.

Is the booth difficult to use?

No. The Opulence Sunless booth gives simple voice-guided instructions and walks you through four easy positions for even coverage.

Why is the booth heated?

The Opulence Sunless booth features a heated downdraft system that helps keep you comfortable while drawing overspray downward. This creates a cleaner and more comfortable tanning experience.

Understanding Your Results
What is DHA?

DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, is the active tanning ingredient used in professional spray tanning. Our solutions use naturally derived plant-based DHA that reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of dead skin cells to create temporary cosmetic color.

Is your DHA naturally derived?

Yes. The professional organic solutions we selected use naturally derived plant-based DHA, commonly sourced from plant sugars such as sugar beet or sugar cane.

How does a spray tan work?

A spray tan works through a surface-level cosmetic reaction between DHA and amino acids in the outermost layer of dead skin cells. The color develops over several hours and fades as those cells naturally shed.

Does DHA enter my bloodstream?

DHA is designed to work on the outermost layer of dead skin cells and create cosmetic color on the skin surface. It does not tan living skin or stimulate melanin production.

Does a spray tan protect against the sun?

No. A spray tan provides cosmetic color only and does not provide UV protection. Continue using sunscreen and protective clothing whenever you are outdoors.

Will my spray tan look orange?

When the solution, development time, and shade are matched appropriately to your skin tone, the goal is a natural-looking bronze rather than an orange result. Proper preparation and aftercare also matter.

How long does a spray tan last?

Most clients enjoy their spray tan for 5–7 days. With good preparation, daily moisturizing, and spray tan-friendly aftercare, some clients maintain beautiful color for up to 10 days.

Why does my spray tan fade?

Your spray tan fades because the colored outer layer of dead skin cells naturally sheds over time. Dry skin, hot showers, chlorine, salt water, shaving, and exfoliation can speed up fading.

What is the difference between bronzer and developed color?

Cosmetic bronzer is temporary guide color that gives immediate color and helps show where the solution was applied. It rinses off during your first shower. Your developed color comes from DHA and continues to appear over the next several hours.

Aftercare
When can I shower after my spray tan?

Classic 8-Hour solution should be rinsed after about 8 hours. Rapid 4-Hour solution can be rinsed after about 2 hours for a light glow, 3 hours for medium bronze, or 4 hours for deeper color.

What should I do during my first rinse?

Use warm water only, avoid soap if possible, skip scrubbing tools, and gently pat your skin dry. If you chose a bronzer solution, the cosmetic bronzer rinsing off is normal.

Can I work out after my spray tan?

It is best to wait until after your first rinse before heavy sweating or intense exercise. Sweat during development can affect how evenly the tan sets.

Can I swim after my spray tan?

After your first rinse, swimming is possible, but frequent exposure to chlorine or salt water may cause the tan to fade faster.

Can I shave after my spray tan?

Yes, after your first rinse. Use a sharp razor and light pressure, because shaving can gently exfoliate the skin and may shorten the life of your tan.

Will hot showers affect my tan?

Long hot showers or baths can speed up fading. Warm, shorter showers are usually better for maintaining your spray tan.

What products should I avoid after a spray tan?

Avoid harsh scrubs, exfoliating acids, strong detergents, heavy oils, and products that aggressively remove dead skin cells. Spray tan-friendly cleansers and moisturizers are best.

How do I make my spray tan last longer?

Moisturize daily, use gentle cleansers, avoid aggressive exfoliation, limit long hot showers, and use tan-friendly aftercare products such as Shower Glow and Skin Glow when appropriate.

Special Events
When should I get a spray tan before my wedding?

Most brides schedule their final spray tan 2–3 days before the wedding. This allows the color to fully develop and settle before photos and the event.

When should I get a spray tan before vacation?

Scheduling 1–2 days before travel works well for most vacations. Remember that a spray tan does not provide sun protection, so sunscreen is still essential.

Can I get more than one spray tan in a week?

Sometimes, yes. The best timing depends on your goal, current color, and event schedule. We can help you decide whether one appointment or a planned sequence makes sense.

Can men get spray tans?

Absolutely. Professional spray tanning is popular with men and women for vacations, weddings, fitness competitions, photos, and everyday confidence.

Skin & Safety
Can I get a spray tan if I have sensitive skin?

Many clients with sensitive skin receive spray tans comfortably, but everyone is different. If you have known sensitivities, allergies, or dermatologic conditions, ask your healthcare provider before booking.

Can I receive a spray tan while pregnant?

Many expectant mothers consider spray tanning as an alternative to sunbathing, but every pregnancy is different. We recommend checking with your obstetrician or healthcare provider first.

Will a spray tan cover scars or stretch marks?

A spray tan will not remove scars or stretch marks, but it may reduce contrast between lighter areas and surrounding skin for some clients.

Can I wear sunscreen with my spray tan?

Yes. Sunscreen is strongly recommended when outdoors. Your spray tan is cosmetic color only and does not protect against UV radiation.

Troubleshooting
Why do my hands and feet sometimes fade faster?

Hands and feet are washed more often and experience more friction. Barrier cream helps soften color on these dry areas, but faster fading there is common.

Does my face fade sooner than my body?

Often, yes. Facial color can fade sooner because we cleanse, exfoliate, and apply skincare to the face more frequently than the rest of the body.

What happens if I get caught in the rain?

If your tan is still developing, heavy rain before your first rinse may affect results. After your first rinse, normal rain exposure will not remove the tan.

How often should I get a spray tan?

Many clients schedule every 7–10 days to maintain steady color, while others book only before events, vacations, or photos. We can help you choose a schedule that fits your goals.
